PM remembers Guardian publisher

Dear Editor,

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Kenneth 'Six' Francis CBE. He served his country with dignity and distinction over the course of many long years, most laudably as the longtime publisher of The Nassau Guardian. Although he was a man of deeply-held principles, Francis was always careful not to allow his personal convictions to interfere with what he perceived to be his higher duty, namely to ensure that the columns and editorial pages of The Nassau Guardian would consistently reflect political balance and fairness.

He succeeded admirably in this regard for he understood the power of the media while at the same time recognizing how vitally important it was that that power be used responsibly and wisely as a means of deepening the democratic experience of our young nation. A committed patriot, Francis was also instrumental in shaping and advancing the careers of many young Bahamians in the journalism profession and in the newspaper and commercial print trades alike. He was a major influence in this regard.

This same commitment to young Bahamians would also find eloquent expression in the trailblazing role that Francis played in helping to open up the traditionally elitist game of recreational and competitive golf to numerous young Bahamians of humble backgrounds.

On behalf of the government and people of The Bahamas, on behalf of my wife and family, and on my own behalf, I offer condolences to the widow, children and extended family of this outstanding Bahamian, Kenneth 'Six' Francis CBE, who achieved an enviable record of accomplishment in his lifetime and in so doing contributed significantly to the development of his beloved Bahamas. May he rest in peace.

- Perry Christie, prime minister
