What to Wear Spring 2013

I think by now that everyone is caught up with the fact that time has changed. Unless you live in a country that doesn't acknowledge that, like Spain or Italy.

An easy way to remember is the little rhyme, "Spring Forward, Fall Backward" Now that I think about it, it doesn't rhyme at all. Does something have to rhyme to be called a rhyme? Nursery rhymes don't rhyme. Maybe we'll just call it a phrase. Anywhos, so in the Spring, time "springs" forward and fall, it "falls" back! That's a clever way to know that you are officially in that season!

But here we are, yet again, another season, and your closet is probably full like mine with last years Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter trends. While there are a few timeless staples, there are some things that are in for a short time only. You can capitalise on it or ignore it and save a few pennies. However you celebrate your style, here's a few tips, thanks to instyle.com for what to wear this Spring, if you want to make a statement! (Some of these you may notice I predicted last year.)

Remember the "White Hot Winter"? Looks like we're having a white hot spring too. I guess the Red Carpet was a major predictor for this.

WHY WE LOVE IT In a complicated world, there’s something reassuring about clean, simple black-and-white, especially when it’s organized into logical stripes, grids, and figure-flattering vertical planes. The look is modern, cool, and assertive—but never in your face—and smacks of self-possession.

HOW TO WEAR IT Introducing another color would lessen the impact. So if your neckline begs for ornamentation, choose a statement piece in, yes, black or white, as Oscar de la Renta did with a gown. Shoes can be black, white, or a mix of the two, and makeup should do nothing more than highlight your brows and bone structure (contour away!).

(Totally called this one) LIKE A FLAME

WHY WE LOVE IT What's spring without a big hit of colour? In the transition from chilly to warmer temps, we're ready to embrace a hot hue. "Plus, fiery red is a mood elevator," says Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone's executive director. "It can boost confidence and make you feel more in control." While it's not for the shy, the sharp-edged colour will please those drawn to making a strong statement.

HOW TO WEAR IT Go with bluer reds if your complexion is fair; spicier orange-reds will flatter darker skin. Whatever you choose, keep hair sleek and lips neutral (red lips would be too matchy), and step out in black or nude shoes that won't distract. Resist the urge to stop at just a pop--a long line of colour is often visually slimming (not to mention stunning).

(I've got my tuxedo jeans ready to go!) TUXEDO 2.0

WHY WE LOVE IT Nothing against dresses, but there's something so elegant and sensual about a woman in men's evening wear. When a gown appears too formal and a cocktail dress a bit frivolous, black-tie styling will suit the occasion. With jackets ranging from cropped to hourglass to sleeveless, there's a tuxedo-inspired style that will fit anyone's specifications.

Showing some skin keeps the attitude intriguing. But if going shirtless seems risky, slip a blouse under the jacket. Punctuate it with a fluttering jewel-toned scarf in ruby or amethyst, and emphasize the simplicity of the suit with closed-toe pumps. Coif hair smooth and neat, and opt for swipe of nude lipstick—a less predictable choice than red.

A staple of spring fashion

SWEET & SOFT WHY WE LOVE IT If you were starting to yearn for springtime, well, here it is, in its more light-hearted (and prettiest) incarnation. Floaty, boudoir-inspired silks in chiffon and satin feel as gentle as a breeze as they swirl around the body in sherbet shades. This is warm-weather dressing at its best—fluid, unstructured, and effortless.

HOW TO WEAR IT There's an innocence to these feel-good textures and pastels, so be subtle with make up and hair. Try a slick of lip gloss and a centre part—no braids, curls, or ballerina buns, please! Resist the urge to pile on accessories (a pendant or headband is OK), and opt for metallic sandals as a foil to the airy look.

Can't go wrong with this one!

MODERN FLORAL WHY WE LOVE IT Dandelions bloom at Valentino; Dries Van Noten and Rochas picked chrysanthemums, while Bottega Veneta scattered silk marguerite daisies on a V-neck dress. Thakoon showed a bouquet of freesias and dog rose on crêpe de chine. Chic and strong, prints give covered up looks a romantic fairy-tale spin—that’s the fresh appeal.

HOW TO WEAR IT Piling accessories onto these striking florals is like stuffing an arrangement of peonies with baby’s breath and ferns. The prints are edgy bordering on grunge, so stay away from anything too pretty—hair should be a little messy, shoes a bit tough—and seek out dresses with flowers winding down the centre, which will draw the eye in, creating a slimming illusion.

WARM-WEATHER LEATHER WHY WE LOVE IT Now that designers are treating leather as if it were fabric—dyeing it in punchy colours, cutting it into feminine shapes, and draping it in novel ways—the supple skin has taken on a whole new versatility. Paper-thin hides, as well as hidden slits and clever perforations, keep you feeling (and looking) cool.

HOW TO WEAR IT Choose an unexpected shape like high-waist pants, a trench coat, or shorts in a flirty hue, a nude, or a shiny metallic. Steer clear of anything with tough details like studs, laced-up sides, or grommets—this is a ladylike vibe. Pair it with delicate silk or lace, or even more leather, and opt for a super-sheer body shaper, such as Spanx’s Skinny Britches, to slip on underneath.

Time to slip on that lace dress I bought in October!

LACE DRESSES WHY WE LOVE THEM Lace dresses are often either conservative or coquettish, but these strike a lovely balance. Think Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (can’t you see her in the green one?), not the Queen Mother. Playful colors counter the naughtiness of the lace, creating a sexy attitude that’s anything but stodgy.

HOW TO WEAR THEM You have to be careful here—lace can get cheap-looking quickly. Choose high-quality material, and pair vibrant hues with shoes in the same color family or in a metallic. Wear hair loose to keep the overall look easy- going and fun.

One of my personal favourites!

A-LINE HOW TO WEAR IT This classic skirt flaunts an early-’60s attitude, and the polished daytime look is ever-appropriate. But our A-line obsession is rooted in the universally flattering, hip-and-thigh disguising shape that lets us have our cake and eat it too. And for that, it will always have a place in our closet.

HOW TO WEAR IT There’s a prim, clean-scrubbed vibe to these skirts. So add a fitted little jacket or a basic belt, and carry a structured bag. And while it may be tempting to slip on a pair of flats, these skirts, especially those that fall below the knee, beg for the height of a ladylike heel.

Last year it was the peplum, this year it's the:

BOLD RUFFLES WHY WE LOVE IT Whether they're framing the face or spiraling off the hips, architectural ruffles build the foundation of a dramatic evening look. These stiff, austere waves are more modern than the floppier furls of past seasons, making this feminine detail feel new again.

HOW TO WEAR IT Ruffles act as their own accessory, so there's no need to trot out your jewels. If they're snaking around your neck or cascading down your shoulder, pull your hair back in a sleek style so it doesn't interfere. These oversize undulations go nicely with pumps or sandals in a complementary—yet not matching-colour.

Last and very much least (in fabric)

PEEK-A-BOO WHY WE LOVE IT It's adventurous. It lets you reveal your flat abs and toned thighs. Because, thanks to strategically placed windows, it offers suggestive glimpses of skin while still keeping you fully clothed. It's an illusionist approach that's unique and special—very now and very wow.

HOW TO WEAR IT You actually must possess some daring—you aren't going to dash out to the store for milk in these or throw one on for work. But to the right event, such as a nightclub or a dressy party, these look-at-me styles make a perfect statement. So pull on coordinating lingerie, and play a bit of hide-and-seek.

There you go guys! Like I said, most of these I already predicted last year. You had since last summer to jump on these trends. How many of you have already started? How many of you are going to start? How many of you just don't care? Well either way, always remain, Fashionable!
