The 2013 Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) CARIFTA Trials is set for March 15-16 at the new Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. The 2013 CARIFTA Games is scheduled for that same venue, two weeks after the trials. The Nassau Guardian will highlight an athlete who is expected to make the CARIFTA team leading up to the trials. Today, we focus on Devynne Charlton.
Devynne Charlton
Her nickname is 'Sonic', her personality is work, her strength is the hurdles, and she is one of the best female relay starters in The Bahamas today. Her name is Devynne Charlton and many say she is the best mental athlete hoping to represent her nation in this year's CARIFTA Games. The daughter of former Bahamian hurdler David Charlton, Devynne is a chip off the old block as they say. Many athletes who will make the 2013 CARIFTA Team are just gifted, but young Charlton is a product of gift and hard work. She will be attempting to medal in one of the most difficult of all sprint disciplines, the 100-meter (m) hurdles.
Charlton did not medal in the hurdles in last year's CARIFTA Games, but the bronze medal went to Shakera Hall of Barbados in a time of 13.89 seconds. Charlton went into the event with a personal best time of 13.77 seconds and was far off her best performance. Still, Charlton was the starter on the gold medal winning 4x100m team. Devynne won the gold in Montego Bay, Jamaica in the under-17 girls 100 meters in 2011, clocking 11.91 seconds. She also won a silver in the under-17 girls 4x100m that year. This year, Devynne Charlton is expected to be one of the top athletes representing The Bahamas in the CARIFTA Games. Look for 'Super Sonic' to send a strong golden message for The Bahamas.
