The
Bahamas is a renowned tourist destination with cruise-line ports of
call for Nassau and Freeport as well as numerous luxury resorts
including the world famous Atlantis. The Bahamas is an archipelagic
nation of more than 700 islands that cover a geographic region roughly
equivalent in size to California. According to a 2010 census, the
Bahamas has a population of 353,000. Seventy percent of the population
lives on the island of New Providence - where the capital, Nassau, is
located. Another 15 percent live on Grand Bahama, which has the
country's second largest city, Freeport. The rest of the population is
scattered over two dozen outer islands (commonly referred to as the
"Family Islands").
