Demand for ?First Day Covers? of the ?Potcake Commorative Stamp Issue? is reaching fever pitch proportions, in Nassau and most notably in Abaco, where it is not only the ?talk of the town? but artist, Alton R. Lowe, resident of Green Turtle Cay is being inundated with orders to a point almost unprecedented in his vast experience as ?artist to the stamps.?

Late Potcake Star AMIGO who died in 2007 after a brave battle with cancer, the ?inspiration? behind this historic Issue, appears on the cover of ?Abaco Life,? whose owner, Jim Kerr reports unprecedented sales of the magazine which appears all over Abaco as well as in many areas of the US, as locals and tourists clamor to be part of this thrilling and historic moment.

The Issue, as well as First Day Covers, now officially released by the Post Office in Nassau is available through the Bahamas Philatelic Bureau ( www.Bahamasphilatelic@bahamas.gov.bsThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and a whole series of celebrations are being planned in Nassau and Grand Bahama (AMIGO?S birthplace.)

Limited Edition prints of the painting and posters of enlarged versions of the historic stamps will be on sale throughout the Bahamas, most notably at The Bahamas Humane Society in Nassau, and The Humane Society of Grand Bahama (where AMIGO started his climb to stardom as Poster Dog) - in aid of AMIGO?S FUND (www.amigosfund.org) which will directly benefit those organisations.

It is clear that this Issue is coming at the most appropriate time possible, as the subject of Animal Protection becomes more and more important politically, not only throughout the Bahamas, but worldwide, as animal lovers are ?coming out of the closet? in droves, demanding that their furry friends be treated humanely and responsibly.

It is hoped that this lovely initiative on the part of the Post Office of the Bahamas as well as the wonderful support of the artist, Mr. Lowe will make people more aware of the rich potential of our wonderful native dogs, so long taken for granted, but now given their rightful ?Place of Honour.'

Frances Singer-Hayward, who rescued AMIGO as a starving potcake in the bush, stated that she is ?incredibly proud of AMIGO, as well as the three other wonderful potcakes featured in this beautiful series, Turtle, Tripod and Oreo, all of whom have similar histories, tragic potcakes left to die had it not been for ?people who cared.? This is the complete essence of AMIGO?S mission.? She stated: ?to make the world a better place for potacakes (and all animals) and as the Inspiration of this incredibly beautiful series, which is bound to make people more aware of the plight of these noble creatures, he is doing just that and I only wish he were here to be able to see the fruition of his wonderful efforts.?
