When the new executive team in the Gymnastics Federation of The Bahamas settles in, the first thing on their agenda is to amend the constitution.
The slate of officers inclusive of president Barbara Thompson, Cora Hepburn, Trevor Ramsey and Nikita Wells will have 90 days to act, or make any changes to the rules that govern the federation. Thompson was re-elected as president on Wednesday.
With a full list of activities planned for the upcoming years, Hepburn said it is imperative that additional executive posts be added.
"Within the next 90 days we are going to try and amend the constitution to officially add in about three executive posts," Hepburn confirmed. "There are other amendments that needs to be done and all of that will be done at that time. Actually, what we will try to do is align the constitution with the one that is trying to be in place in the Bahamas Olympic Committee. Once we are able to do this, I think that gymnastics will be well on its way."
Gymnastics is a recognized sport within the Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC), but it is not included in the list of core sports in the country. However, this fact is not stopping the federation from pushing forward. In fact, one of the future goals is to have gymnasts perform at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
Hepburn said: "One day we want to see a national team of gymnasts, about 10-12 in numbers who we can groom and represent the country in the next Central American and Caribbean Games. We are a little ways from that. At the Central American and Caribbean Games, you have to be 16 years and older. We do have a number of gymnasts at the age who have been in the sport for a number of years. Hopefully, we can come up at this point and time with about five or six gymnasts that we can train. What we have to do is make sure that we go and seek Olympic Solidarity funds to try and train these gymnasts. They need to perform in as much competition as possible so they can improve on their levels. Hopefully, who knows, 2014 they can be at the Central American and Caribbean Games."
