Treasure Cay Airport Materials 'Unaccounted For'

The Ministry of Public Works is trying to account for the $1.7 million that was allegedly spent in part on materials to resurface the runway and parking lot of the Treasure Cay airport in Abaco, according to Deputy Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis. Davis was responding to claims by former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham that after his administration spent $1.7 million needed for the work, the Christie administration canceled the project and intends to use the material to perform other public works in Abaco.

During a rally in North Abaco last week, Ingraham said the government he headed signed a $2.6 million contract with Knowles Construction to resurface the runway. "Mr. Knowles requested and we paid $646,000 for the required aggregate to be used on the project," Ingraham said. "To further assist him we also paid $748,000, the cost of the asphalt needed, and we paid $370,000 in mobilization money.

That's $1.764 million on a $2.6 million contract." But Davis told The Nassau Guardian earlier this week that the government did not cancel the project. In fact, he said the government is trying to ascertain how best to move the project forward. "[Ingraham] talked about materials," Davis said. "This is something he has to answer to.

He said that the contract for the Treasure Cay Airport...was paid for over two years [ago]. He said that materials were bought for the airport. We're still trying to find those materials. We are still trying to find where that money went, where it was spent. "If he can tell us where it is and where it has gone that would be helpful to us. My ministry is still trying to find out where it is."
