Avoid 'Malware' While Surfing The Web

Tue, Sep 11th 2012, 10:59 AM

Malicious software, or malware, is the name given for unsolicited software intended to annoy, destroy or exploit. The category includes malicious adware, viruses, keylogging software, computer viruses, spyware, worms and backdoor Trojan programs, which allow attackers unauthorized access to and control over a user's computer. Malware often loads through infected links and downloads when users click on ads or buttons designed to launch the programs.

The links and buttons may be presented to an intended victim via a phishing e-mail or on a malicious website. Malware can sometimes load invisibly and, in a worst-case scenario, allow others to control your computer. It's a good idea to become familiar with security terms and what danger each security threat poses.

The risk

Kids often value "free" over "safe". Young surfers involved in link-sharing and file-sharing among peers are at higher risk of downloading infected programs. Malware distributors know kids seek out free software, music and "cracks" (serial numbers) for pirating commercial games; they also know these same kids often trust links and e-mail attachments far more than they should. Not only is it dangerous to download software, music and cracks from file sharing sites like Pirate Bay, it is illegal.

Tips

• Teach kids to be extremely cautious when opening downloads or links from friends and never click links or open attachments from strangers

• Never click ads or answer unsolicited e-mails

• Teach kids to refrain from automatically clicking "yes" buttons anywhere on the screen - read all text carefully o Download legitimate software only, and only from trusted sites. Software is available that can help spot the bogus software offers

o Kids should immediately report anything suspicious to an adult

What can you do:

First and foremost, make sure the operating system and any program you use are up to date with patches/updates

• Always be wary of any strange e-mails, especially ones with attachments. When in doubt of the e-mail, you can always contact the sender and ask if their message was legitimate.

• When browsing the Internet, always watch what you click and install. Do not simply click OK to dismiss pop-up windows.

• Install anti-virus software; scan and update regularly. It can, in most cases, remove and prevent viruses, worms, trojans and (depending on the software) some spyware.

• Install anti-spyware/anti-adware; scan and update regularly. It will remove and (depending on the software) prevent future adware and spyware.
