First teens and money workshop a success

The economic future looks bright for today's Bahamian teens after scores of them proved that they can live debt free after putting $1,000 to good use during last Saturday's Providing Money Skills Youth Need For Life financial workshop.

The workshop that was facilitated by Creative Wealth Bahamas, organizers of Camp Millionaire and The Money Game was held at the British American Financial Center. The event also coincides with April being Financial Literacy for Youth Month.

Organizer of the event and pioneer, Keshelle Kerr, the only certified creative wealth coach in The Bahamas said that the seminar was so successful she's having to accommodate another set of teens this weekend in a morning and afternoon session. Participants included various organizations, clubs and church groups.

"There is no reason you can't start your own business at your age," Ms. Kerr told the youngters. "All you have to do is go online and search for young or teenage millionaires and see how one small idea turned into a million dollar company. I see that there is potential for you to millionaires if you live the life you dream about. Just remember that you are the CEO of your own life and financial freedom is your responsibility."

Teacher Marissa LaFleur was one of the parents who decided to sit in on a portion of the seminar and was thrilled with the outcome. "As a parent you want your child to be financially savvy and for them to expand their minds to see a broader picture," she said. "I especially loved the interactive aspect of the seminar because they got to handle $1,000 and it was surprising to see how some of them were able to free themselves of all debts. Overall though, I am very open to implementing some of the things my daughter learned to our family finances."
