Hundreds of streets to be named

The government's street naming program has revealed about 800 unnamed roads in New Providence alone, according to information from the Ministry of Public Works.
Deputy Permanent Secretary Bruce Walker said the ministry had the mammoth task of suggesting names for all of those roads.
And while that exercise is done, Walker said the ministry still has to get final approval from the Cabinet Office before it can begin erecting street signs.
Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham announced in early 2010 that the street naming exercise would commence soon after. It was one of the Free National Movement's 2007 manifesto promises.
Officials had hoped that the exercise would be complete ahead of the election registration process.
In the run up to the 2007 general election, there was confusion as to which constituencies some people were in because of the unnamed roads.
However, Parliamentary Commissioner Errol Bethel said that even though the exercise is not yet complete, he does not believe that it will pose a problem this year as registered voters would have had enough time to review their voters card to ensure they are in the correct constituencies.
The street naming exercise is being done in conjunction with the Parliamentary Registration Department.
Walker said the final list will be sent to Minister of Public Works Neko Grant sometime this week.
Once the exercise is complete, Walker acknowledged that it would greatly improve the registration process.
"This exercise is working in tandem with the house numbering program, so it would be more clear where people live," he said.
"The idea of having street names and house numbers would help tremendously with identifying houses and businesses. And we also will have information integrated with police and ambulance services.
"Time is crucial if you're dealing with any issue, so if you could quickly pull up an address on the GPS, you don't have to be going around in circles."
The names of the streets have been placed in The Nassau Guardian over the course of the year so far.
Walker said several people suggested name changes as a result.
He said those suggestions will be taken into consideration at the Cabinet level.
Walker said the ministry tried to stick to names relating to flora and fauna.
The Golden Isles constituency has the most unnamed roads with 96. Suggested names in that constituency include Sea Crab Close, Black Tuna Close and Sweet Potato Close.
The street naming program is running concurrently with the house numbering program.
