What attracted you to the sector? What motivates you?
I always liked the idea of being in charge of my finances.  During my last year in high school I was given the work-study opportunity at International Portfolio Analytics (IPA), which truly whetted my appetite for the financial industry.
My interest was further sparked when I had the opportunity to gain exposure in the insurance field while working in the premium processing department at the then Global Life Insurance Company; that is where I was introduced to more of the accounting side of the industry.  Currently, I am employed at Family Guardian, but previous experiences over the past eleven years -- especially my short stint at the Securities Commission of The Bahamas (SCB) -- gave me an even greater desire to further explore the dynamics of the financial sector. Because I'm goal-oriented, my motivation comes from completing tasks in a timely manner and excelling at whatever I do.
Why do you think you have been successful?
My strong faith in God and the continued guidance and support from my family, especially my mother. Peers and other seasoned persons in the field have all contributed to my success as well. I also try to surround myself with positive, like-minded individuals in the financial industry. I try to remain focused and to give my very best at all I attempt.
Did mentoring play a part in your success?
Regardless of the career path one chooses, mentoring plays a vital role in your success.  I can attest that mentoring has played a major role in my success as I've had advisers such as Anthony Ferguson that ensured that I keep moving in the right direction.  He has encouraged me to complete the Certified Financial Planner course, which has provided some of the necessary tools to function, and to become and remain successful within the financial services industry.
What qualifications do you feel are the most useful in helping you perform in the sector?
Obtaining as many academic qualifications such as a Bachelor of Arts in Economics/Finance and the Series 7 are all good in its place; however, being able to apply the wealth of knowledge that I learnt in the classrooms and actually being emerged in the field are the factors that I feel are most important to perform in the sector.  Topping this off with excellent customer service skills, the love for my career, and a desire to help others plan their finances all enable and motivate me to perform effectively.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career? How did you overcome it?
Early on in my career, the biggest challenge was balancing work and life. At a point, I was solely career driven and focused on what professional exam to take, what workshop to attend or any activity that would have enhanced or added value to my professional life. I forgot to "live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit", as Henry David Thoreau once said.
I overcame this by designating scheduled times during the week when I would spend time with my family and friends.
What advice would you give young people just starting out in the industry?
I would encourage young people to take advantage of the career opportunities presented to them and to study and work hard as well as having a work-life balance. Get as much exposure and experience in the industry as you can. Also, if at all possible, work abroad in the global market, which adds value and distinction to professional careers and personal lives. In addition, I would admonish them to be of good character, and embrace integrity and discipline in all areas of their lives.  Most importantly, keep reading and never stop improvingIndustry position: Senior investment advisor, FamGuard Group of Companies
