BEC CONTRADICTS MINISTER

In a statement that contradicted a relevation by Minister for the Environment Dr. Earl Deveaux that the Bahamas Electricity Corporation overcharged some customers by 17 percent, BEC said yesterday that the figure is actually nine percent.
On Tuesday, Deveaux toldThe Nassau Guardianthat BEC mistakenly charged affected customers a seven percent stamp tax, and also charged a 10 percent charge for customs duties that it should not have charged.
He said 2,000 bills reflecting the overcharge were sent out to customers.However, according to a statement released by BEC yesterday, the consumers were only charged a portion of those taxes.
