THE Government will not approve the Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) levying a temporary extra tariff on Bahamian consumers in a bid to recover its estimated $5 million-plus Hurricane Irene repair costs, the minister of the environment confirmed yesterday.
Explaining that the Ingraham administration had neither received an application to implement such a tariff, nor a detailed summary of the unanticipated costs BEC incurred in its August-September 2011 restoration efforts, Earl Deveaux told Tribune Business that the Government was not prepared to further burden Bahamian businesses and consumers.
