New Providence recorded its first traffic fatality over the weekend.
According to police, around 4:20 a.m. on Sunday an 18-year-old woman and two passengers (a man and  woman) were travelling south on Baillou Hill Road in a Honda Accord when they collided into a Ford Explorer.
The 18-year-old, who was the driver of the Honda, died at the scene and the other woman was taken to the hospital where she is in critical condition, said police.
The driver of the Ford vehicle and the other male were unharmed.
Last year, the country recored 44 traffic fatalities, of which 41 were males.
Half of last year's traffic deaths occurred on New Providence.  Ten people were killed in traffic accidents on Grand Bahama and 12 died in accidents on the Family Islands.
At least 276 people were killed in traffic accidents during the past six years, police have said.
Although there has been little research done into the causes of these traffic deaths, officials believe alcohol and drugs play a major role.
Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade has vowed to crack down on minor traffic offenses.
He said in a recent press conference that people driving cars with heavily-tinted windows and windshields will come under greater scrutiny by police, who will also target and arrest underage and unlicensed drivers, and the car owners that assist them.
