Charity Organizations Helping Those in Need

Charity organizations in The Bahamas expect to help hundreds of Bahamians this holiday season.  Great Commission Ministries (GCM) is receiving some assistance from the Sandals Royal Bahamian resort, with its staff not only supplying food, but also helping to serve it.  "Everybody was given gifts that were donated by various people from the community," said GCM Executive Director Minalee Hanchell on Tuesday.  According to her, "Just seeing the children smiling and so joyful" is reward enough for her work.

Hanchell continued, "We have [employees from] Sandals coming in, bringing in food and going to our feeding center on Wulff Road."  Although food is usually served at the center daily, Minalee said Tuesday was a special day because Sandals was helping out.  "On Friday we also will do a special meal for our clients," she said.  Hanchell said the feeding center will be open on Christmas Eve, and activities such as handing out food, clothing and groceries will be carried out.

"For Christmas day we'll make sure that everyone in our emergency shelters will receive gifts as well."  Caroline Turnquest, director general of the Bahamas Red Cross, said the organization has sent out 500 meal parcels throughout New Providence and the Family Islands over the last two weeks.  "That's an annual event for us," she said, noting that recipients of meals via the meals on wheels program will also get a Christmas parcel as well.
