Major Get Opportunity To Win

Former World Boxing Association Caribbean super featherweight champion Bahamian Meacher Major has been given another opportunity to win the title. Dr. Calvin Inalsingh, who heads the FEDECARIBE, the WBA's Caribbean professional organization, has informed The Nassau Guardian that Major has been granted the option to fight for the vacant title

The title became vacant when Major failed to defend the crown won two years ago. The Trinidad/Tobago native Dr. Inalsingh is one of the leading boxing personalities in the Caribbean and a noted boxing physician who was recently awarded the prestigious Ring Physicians Award.

He explained: "Well, you know he never defended the title. He won it two years ago and never made a defense. The responsibility to defend the title is on the champion. But, I admit that somehow, he was never communicated with and that's why we have gone this route. A match needs to be arranged with him against another opponent and the winner will be the super featherweight champion of FEDECARIBE," said Dr. Inalsingh.

Major, now 27, has a 15-3-1 record with 13 knockouts. He is presently on a three-fight win streak. A boxer-puncher, Major is considered by many to be the most electrifying fighter in the Bahamian scene. He has a following that compares favorably against all others. Whenever he is on the boxing card, a rather nice crowd appears. He has been focusing on the super featherweight division for the last two years although he started his career as a lightweight and presently holds the Bahamian lightweight championship. In fact, his title victory against Luis Couoh was advertised as a lightweight match.

Dr. Inalsingh who supervised the match for the FEDECARIBE later corrected the situation. Although a rugged ring opponent at lightweight, he has had his three defeats in that division. He put on weight to fight Edgar Santana (138-1/2 pounds). Major was at 139-1/2 and not comfortable at the weight. His other two defeats were to lightweights Lamont Peterson and fellow Bahamian Edner Cherry.

"I will be campaigning in the super featherweight division for the remainder of my career. I'm glad I got this opportunity and I'm thankful to the WBA Caribbean organization. This is the time for me to move my career up. I will now concentrate on being the Caribbean super featherweight champion again and then go for bigger things," said Major on Monday.

He said also that he didn't expect to have a problem finding a promoter to "do the show because I'm talking to several people who want to put on shows here."

Major says he has a time table and he acknowledged that for him "time is starting to run out."

"I don't have any time to fool around. This boxing is a serious business. You have to think things out for yourself, look at situations and make good decisions. When you go in the ring, it's you alone so it pays to make the best decisions, ones that are good for your career. I'm happy with what's happening for me. I get another chance at the Caribbean title. I need to win that and then move on. Once I've tried my best whatever happens in my career, I don't want to be disappointed that I did not give it my best shot," said Major.

Meanwhile, he informed that he will have his "people" communicate with the Bahamas Boxing Commission and get "everything straight" about the conditions and then contact Dr. Inalsingh.

"Now, I get with my people and tell them they have to contact the Commission. We need also to contact Dr. Inalsingh and let him know we have accepted the chance to fight for the vacant title," said Major.
