Having a balanced schedule for every sport played in the Government Secondary Schools Sporting Association (GSSSA) might be a hard task for president Alfred Forbes and his executives, but they are all up to the challenge.
After hosting a successfull volleyball season, the newly elected officials will now turn their attention to basketball which will tip-off on November 21. Some 14 regular season games will be played at the CI Gibson or the DW Davis gymnasiums. All junior games will be played at CI Gibson and the senior, at the DW Davis gymnasium. The association opened the sporting season with volleyball on Monday, September 26.
On Wednesday, four champions were crowned, bringing the season to a close. Winning the junior girls title was the AF Adderly Tigers, DW Davis won the junior boys with CR Walker taking the senior girls and CI Gibson the senior boys. Forbes said: "This is probably one of the most competitive seasons that we have had in quite a while. The schedule ran exactly as planned, to the tee. The day we said we wanted to start we got things going. We actually ended a day earlier. So all and all, if there is any indication to what is to come, I believe that basketball is going to be even more exciting than volleyball was.
"Basketball starts in a couple of weeks and we are looking forward to a good season. Everyone was participating in tournaments pre-season, but that is not the reason why we gave them a break. We wanted the teams to rest up because some of the players were on the volleyball team. But I heard that all the schools and teams have been practicing like crazy. I think the level in the high schools [has] stepped up a little bit. The level is higher now in that everyone wants to win and everyone believes that they have the best team."
Teams will break for Christmas and hit the court again in January. The season is expected to conclude a week before the Hugh Campbell Invitational Basketball Classic. The classic will be in February, 2012.
The remaining sports on the GSSSA calendar are track and field, soccer and softball. All will be held during the January to June period.
