THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FROM 7:30 AM TO 8:30 AM, TUESDAY 23RD APRIL, 2024.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR CAT ISLAND, GREAT EXUMA, RUM CAY, AND SAN SALVADOR ALONG WITH THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.

AT 7:15 AM LIGHTNING DETECTION, RADAR, AND SATELLITE IMAGERY CONTINUED TO DEPICT ORGANIZED LINES OF SHOWERS AND EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS MOVING TOWARD AND ACROSS THE WARNING AREAS. THESE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH AN ACTIVE COLD FRONT.

SOME OF THESE SHOWERS WILL BE LOCALLY HEAVY AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE STRONG TO SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, AND WATERSPOUT ACTIVITY. LOCALIZED FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE DURING THESE STORMS.

BOATERS IN THE WARNING AREAS SHOULD HAVE ALREADY SOUGHT SAFE HARBOUR AND RESIDENTS IN THE WARNING AREAS SHOULD REMAIN INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN. RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
