Minister Miller thanks The Nature Conservancy for its contribution to protecting the environment

Environment and Natural Resources Minister the Hon. Vaughn Miller reflected on The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) storms, successes and partnerships as he congratulated the organization for its work of conservation in The Bahamas over the past 20 years.

“We stand with you as we turn our attention to the goals for the next 20 years.  May you resolve to reach even bigger targets than you have over the last two decades . . .,” said Minister Miller.

The Nature Conservancy in The Bahamas promotes environmental conservation and resilience to achieve sustainable fisheries, coral conservation, climate adaptation, and effective management of marine protected areas.

At this 20th Anniversary, Minister Miller thanked the TNC for its contribution and encouraged the organization to continue to work with the Ministry to do great things for the environment in The Bahamas.

“Overall you have helped to advance national priorities by providing technical assistance for policy and planning including science decision support tools, directly implementing conservation projects, building local capacity and coalitions, grant-making and designing innovative sustainable financing mechanisms,” said Minister Miller.

Executives and employees of TNC joined NGOs, heads of academic institutions and stakeholders at the celebratory event Friday March 15, 2024 at Balmoral Club. The Hon. Zane Lightbourne, State Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources, Colin Higgs, Permanent Secretary and senior government officials were present for the occasion.

The event included reflections, emanating from a panel interview of past and present TNC staff, on the 20th anniversary theme 'Conservation, Collaboration and Community'.

Minister Miller said TNC has been an “invaluable” resource to every environmental agency in The Bahamas.

He described the organization’s journey as one of “dedication, resilience and unwavering commitment” to serving the marine community in The Bahamas.

He noted their support of the “budding prescribed burning programme” of the Forestry Unit for multiple years, outside of their mandate: “This is the mark of a true partner.”

Minister Miller also highlighted TNCs provision of “vital” and “sustainable” employment and training for some of the nation’s brightest young conservation planners and marine professionals which has contributed to capacity building.

Rob Brumbaugh, executive director, Caribbean Division, The Nature Conservancy, gave opening remarks and pledged to continue to be a leader in conservation in The Bahamas and the world.
