Over 40 high school students are wrapping up a boot camp designed to raise awareness and interest in cyber security.

The Bahamas-Huawei Cyber Security Boot Camp, held January 8 - January 26, 2024, is in keeping with the Government's mandate on Information and Communications Technology for talent cultivation.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Renewal along with the Chinese Embassy, Huawei Technology Co. Ltd., and Cable Bahamas are conducting the Boot Camp to the theme,  'Enabling an Inclusive and Sustainable Digital Bahamas.'  The Camp is an initiative to drive equity and quality in education under Huawei Tech4all Digital Inclusion.

The participants, ages 13-18, who represent various high schools, were selected from 11 Urban Renewal Centres in New Providence; five were selected from Cat Island.

The two-hour sessions have been held at Gary and Myrtle Youth Center, Evangelistic Temple, Collins Avenue, exploring topics including Introduction to Digitalization, 5G Era, What’s 5G, How 5G Benefits our Lives, Class Three - Cloud Era, Make everything a Service, AI Technology Introduction, AI Change the Life, Cybersecurity Introduction, Computer Coding Introduction and Trial and more.

H.E. Leon Williams, ITU Ambassador greeted the participants during his visit to the camp January 24. He advised them that the demand for jobs in the cyber industry is outpacing the supply of qualified employees and encouraged them to pursue cybersecurity career pathways.

“If you get involved in cyber security and engineering, your future is bright. You cannot afford to be second grade. Study well. Mathematics is the mother of all sciences. You have to be able to do math. Do the hard subjects and your career will take you to places unbeknown,” said Ambassador Williams.

H.E. Jamaal Rolle, Bahamas Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, inspired the students with his art creations.

Lilliemae Longley, Operations Manager, Urban Renewal, stated the Camp has achieved its goals. “The children were so excited. They have learned a lot,” she said.
