The Bahamas Red Cross Society is very pleased to announce that Dame Marguerite Pindling has graciously agreed to launch the Annual Red Cross Raffle, at Scotiabank (Bahamas) Limited Headquarters, Bay Street, Nassau, on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Pauline Allen-Dean, former president of the Society, and chairperson of the Raffle Committee, is spearheading the raffle. “We appeal to the general public to support this raffle. It is another fundraising initiative of the Red Cross to assist in meeting the needs of the vulnerable members of our community,” she said.

This year’s raffle offers an exciting array of prizes, leading with a brand new, fully loaded, 2010 Toyota Corolla. Other prizes include round trip tickets for two to any route flown by Bahamasair, any inter-island route flown by Sky Bahamas Airline, and ruby earrings and pendant donated by Colombian Emeralds, among others.

Raffle prizes will be drawn on August 28, 2010, at Solomon’s Super Centre, East/West Highway.

The Grand Raffle is an annual tradition of the Bahamas Red Cross that greatly assists in underwriting the operational budget of the Society. Given present challenging economic conditions, there is a greater need to provide cooked meals daily through programmes like Meals-on-Wheels that feed approximately 160 persons; appeals for assistance through this programme is growing.

Additionally, programmes like the Society’s School Milk Scheme that provides fresh milk to vulnerable children in New Providence and the Family Islands, the After-School Mentoring Programme, which aids children from challenging socio-economic environments; in addition to Bahamian residents and immigrants, in dire need of food parcels, all benefit from funds raised through proceeds of the raffle.

“The Bahamas Red Cross Society requests corporate Bahamas and private citizens to join the drive to meaningfully address the needs of at risk and vulnerable members of our community,” said Caroline Turnquest, director general of the Society.

Raffle tickets are available from volunteer salespersons at a number of businesses in Nassau including Super Value, City Markets, Solomon’s Super Centre, Phil’s Food Service, local banks, and from Grand Raffle committee members.
