As countries celebrated sustainable urban development during World Cities Day this week, Janeen Bullard marked 12 years of independently championing sustainable practices and safeguarding biodiversity across the country.

Janeen, the principal and lead environmental consultant at JSS Consulting, recognized at an early age the need to protect the natural wonders of The Bahamas and empower organizations to embrace sustainable practices. She worked at the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) before embarking on entrepreneurship.

“I have always had an admiration for the natural environment, and this led to a commitment to environmental conservation instilled in me by my family and regularly visiting Eleuthera and Andros,” Janeen said.

“I have witnessed first-hand the delicate balance between nature and human activity. This sparked a passion in me to pursue a career in environmental and marine science, aiming to find sustainable solutions that would protect our natural heritage for future generations."

With clients like Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Island Site Development and other industry leaders under her company’s belt, Janeen boasts of regularly onboarding likeminded young Bahamians with the same passion for marine conservation and environmental stewardship.

“The hands-on approach of a JSS internship develops a deep understanding of the field and the ability to gain practical skills that will be valuable in their future careers. Interns are encouraged to ask questions, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute to meaningful projects.”

Janeen's approach to environmental consulting is rooted in a deep understanding of the delicate balance between nature and business.

“The path to sustainability is a collaborative effort, requiring the active participation of businesses, communities, and governments alike. Sustainable urban development begins with a shared vision and commitment to preserving our natural resources, while fostering economic growth, and improving the quality of life for all citizens.”

Janeen added, “It demands innovation, resilience, and a willingness to adapt, ensuring that we leave a thriving, sustainable world for the generations that follow.”
