Bahamians again urged to save and invest during Investor Week event

RF Bank and Trust Vice President of Investment Banking Jim Wilson said investing remains an important part of growing wealth in the country, explaining that we cannot rely on national insurance benefits to look after us in our old age.

Wilson, who spoke on the sidelines of World Investor Week 2023, said it is important for Bahamians to learn as soon as possible about the benefits of saving and investing.

Wilson said Bahamians have to begin to look toward retirement through saving and investing.

"I think as this knowledge gets out, I think, hopefully, we'll see better educated investors out there, and we can help grow things like BISX," Wilson said.

"We can get more companies on the stock market, and create greater opportunities for people.

"That's one of the things RF is trying to do. I think if you've seen, we started our Strat-Equity Fund recently, and the whole purpose of that fund is to try and help Bahamian businesses get listed.

"And we have other exciting opportunities coming up in the next year or so, to help them out. ... So I think these sessions are great."

RF Securities Investment Advisor Dominic Stubbs explained the difference between investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds and things like real estate.

He also explained to the room what economic shocks are and how they can affect a person's investment.

Bahamas International Securities Exchange (BISX) Chief Operating Officer Holland Grant reminded the attendees that there is inherent risk in all investments.

"All investments have risks ... the most fundamental rule of finance is risk equals return," said Grant.

"The higher risk something is, the higher return you want. The lower risk something is the lower return you're gonna get.

"But what do people do? You want the highest return possible, and you want no risk, right? That doesn't exist, really.

"But getting that point across when I think of it is the most challenging thing to get across to first time investors."
