The Manchester Airport Group (MAG) Limited is working with government to understand what the timeline will be for the development of a new Grand Bahama International Airport, MAG Director Andrew Tyler-Smith told members of the media yesterday.

"The timeline for the airport really is a piece of work that we're undertaking now," Tyler-Smith said.

"So we're working very closely with the government to move that along as quickly as we can."

The new Grand Bahama International Airport is expected to be developed by a Bahamian group called Aerodrome Limited along with MAG and UK-based BHM Construction International UK.

The partnership was announced in March as was the possibility that the full buildout of the airport could take five years and employ 1,200 Bahamians in that time.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Chester Cooper said the development of the new international airport and US pre-clearance facility will cost $200 million and funded through UK Export Finance.

Tyler-Smith was expected to visit Grand Bahama yesterday. He said it would be his second time on the island.

In terms of what MAG will bring to Grand Bahama, he told the media: "Well, we're the largest airport group in the UK. So we're transporting about six million passengers, currently.

"We have a huge cargo operation. We undertake 440,000 tons of cargo through our East Midlands airport.

"We're the largest dedicated cargo hub in UK, and I think those relationships, certainly with the likes of our customers we have there - UPS, FedEx, etc., it will be great to be able to work with them in The Bahamas."

Tyler-Smith said he has his eye on "lots" of other airports in The Bahamas, but the Grand Bahama International Airport will be MAG's first.

"Yes, Manchester Airport Group certainly has aspiration to look at international development and The Bahamas is one of the first," he said.
