Mind, body & soul

A 12-year cancer survivor who has faced many challenges, and whose mantra is that she will "overcome and thrive" is seeking to empower women to move to change in some way that will translate to them being better person with her first women's empowerment summit.

Anita Rolle's Create It will host "Becoming!" with the view of bringing women together in a positive atmosphere that will foster support, inspire and motivate.

"My passion is helping women to embrace their authenticity, believe in themselves, and be the example they wish to see in the world," said Rolle.

Her decision as to who she would have address women's concerns centers around speaking to the entire woman - mind, body, and soul.

Tapped to present will be Simmone L. Bowe, Duquesa Dean, Marisa D. Mason-Smith, Dr. Niambi Campbell-Dean, and Cherrylee Pinder.

"They are the best in their various industries, and can lend a wealth of knowledge," said Rolle. "The topics cover most areas that women struggle in."

Dean will address the subject matter "I will overcome and thrive!" which as a cancer survivor, Rolle says, is a topic she can relate to.

Simmone L. Bowe will speak to the topic, "Let me reintroduce myself!".

Mason-Smith will address the topic "Stop being tingsy! Breaking the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle".

Campbell-Hill will navigate the topic "It's level up time!", and Pinder will assist with "Striking a balance".

"I pray that women embrace the positive messages given and leave empowered and are moved to change in some way that will translate to them being a better woman," said Rolle.

Kendika Campbell-Moss, who will serve as the summit's host, will also be featured on the survival versus love panel along with Chelsea Johnson, a transformational coach, Allicia Rolle and Denise Major.

She chose the word "Becoming" which she says signifies for her, women's navigation of a journey through God's original plan for their life and overcoming adversities to become all that God has called them to be.

Becoming! Women's Empowerment Summit will be held on Sunday, September 24 at the National Training Agency on Gladstone Road between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Also on the agenda will be performances by Staffandra, Patrice Murrell, Alia Coley and Dorrica Vanessa.

"Entertainment is important to maintain a light and fun-filled atmosphere," said Rolle.

Phyllis Garraway will also host a Flaunt It boutique fashion show.

"As a cancer survivor and member of this group, I have a true appreciation for good health and insurance. Many women diagnosed are losing their battle due to lack of finances and support, which is why it was important for me to not only support my peers but to also support the group, because it supports women."

Rolle was also the brain behind Sweat Fete, of which she held two iterations before COVID hit. Sweat Fete was a fun-filled family breast cancer awareness event, which she said was her small way of "doing something to help others in need, as well as cancer warriors going through the mental and physical battle with cancer."

In her first event since COVID, she is hosting "Becoming!" a summit to empower women, something she felt she had to work towards.

"I didn't feel like I had it in me to do what it takes to host an empowerment summit, but for years I've been interacting with women in my own circle - family and friends - mentoring, encouraging and inspiring them to push through a situation and to see positives. I would speak to them and enlighten them to see a new perspective, and they would say thank you. It became clearer and clearer that empowerment was what I am passionate about," said Rolle. "I am gravitating towards mentorship and empowerment, but this has always been my passion."

After the COVID closures, she began drafting ideas in her mind for her what would morph into her upcoming empowerment summit.

"After a while, I became consumed with the idea of empowering women because I had been doing it all along, but not in a formal way. With 'Becoming!' I have formalized my passion. And I am doing it via a summit because I wanted to broaden my scope and reach more people outside of my circle, because women go through a lot. And many of them go through it in silence. A lot of women are battling a lot behind closed doors, despite putting on a smile and being well-dressed when they are out in public."

Tickets for "Becoming!" Women's Empowerment Summit are $50 with proceeds benefiting the Gennie Dean Caring and Sharing Cancer Support Group - a community dedicated to helping cancer patients, warriors, survivors, and their families through the journey of fighting cancer.

Their mission is to support, motivate, and inspire people affected by cancer.

At GD Caring and Sharing Cancer Support Group, they offer a range of programs and services designed to meet the unique needs of each individual - support groups, educational seminars, wellness workshops, and social events.
