A man on bail for murder was yesterday murdered by his accomplice, police said.

Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said shortly after 3 p.m. two masked men, wearing dark clothes and gloves, were seen running west on Lightbourne Street in the Yellow Elder Gardens community.

"It is believed that during the exchange of gunshots, the deceased was shot by his accomplice who fled the area running west along Lightbourne Street," she said.

"Police recovered from the scene a magazine for a high-powered weapon. The deceased is known to police. He is presently on bail for murder."

The victim was 24.

Skippings told The Guardian that police believe that the two men were shooting at another group of people.

Police also said that one of the three people shot on Thursday night died.

The incident happened on Comfort Street and Hay Street shortly after 9 p.m.

The victims, two men and a woman, were standing in front of a sports bar when they were shot by the occupants of a passing car.

The victims were taken to hospital where one of the men later died.

The killers remain at large.

On the issue of bail, officials have long complained about the number of men on bail for serious crimes becoming murder victims.

Recently, Minister of National Security Wayne Munroe said the government is considering implementing a new sentencing regime for dangerous criminals.

He previously said that people charged with murder should be kept in custody for their own protection.

The bail issue and legislative changes over the years have remained controversial given that suspects have a constitutional right to be tried within a reasonable period.

The judicial system has been plagued by a chronic backlog of cases, preventing many suspects from getting early trial dates.

Many end up on bail, even if there is only an expectation that they will not be tried within a reasonable time; police say this contributes significantly to high crime rates.
