Police said a report that a 50-year-old man attempted to abduct a two-year-old girl who was at a supermarket with her mother is "not as reported".

On Tuesday, police said a woman was at a supermarket in southwestern New Providence when a man approached them.

Police reported that the man then attempted to push the cart away from the woman and remove the child but the mother was able to hold onto her daughter and call for help.

However, police said yesterday that after investigating, as well as reviewing surveillance footage from the immediate area, the incident "is not as reported".

"Additionally, members of the public are advised that making false reports is an offense and can lead to prosecution," police said.
