Grand Cay Administrator’s Complex renamed in honour of Roosevelt Curry

The Grand Cay Administrator’s Office was renamed in honor of the late Roosevelt Franklyn 'Roosie' Curry on Friday, August 11, 2023.  

Minister of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting while bringing remarks at the renaming ceremony noted that Mr. Curry was one of the longest-serving Local Government practitioners who, like a few others, served on a local board of works before the establishment of Local Government in 1996. 

In its steadfast commitment to recognize Bahamians from all walks of life who have made notable achievements in nation building and in commemoration of The Bahamas’ 50th independence, the Government is celebrating those who embody what a Bahamian truly is, Minister Sweeting said.

In Grand Cay, Abaco, the Roosevelt Franklyn "Roosie" Curry Administration Complex will stand in recognition of his legacy as a former Chief Councillor, Justice of the Peace and businessman whose dedicated and distinguished service to the people of Grand Cay and he will forever be memorialized. 

The complex is home to the Administrator’s Office, Bahamas Customs, Royal Bahamas Police Force, Marine Resources and the Post Office.

Minister Sweeting stressed that there are many who live and breathe Local Government who embody and personify what Local Government is and they are constant advocates for Local Government communities.

“You dare not mention Local Government without the names of certain individuals such as Roosevelt, Roosie, Big Rose Curry. He was such a man,” Minister Sweeting said.

With the renaming of the building by the Department of Local Government, the minister said Mr. Curry’s name would be seen, heard and spoken of for generations to come and he thanked Mr. Curry’s family for loaning the beloved son of the soil to the country.

“They will know that on this day, that our nation’s top leaders, past and present, paused in a grand way to say, ‘Roosie, thank you. Thanks to your devotion in service to Local Government and most importantly to the island of Grand Cay,’” he said.

Former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham, who has known Mr. Curry for more than 50 years and spoke affectionately of him, said he is most deserving of such an honour and when future generations look on the complex they will enquire of the man whose name on which it now resides.

Leader of the Official Opposition, Michael Pintard, deemed it an honour to be present for the momentous occasion and described Mr. Curry as an incredible Bahamian who loved his family and community, made many sacrifices and made his contributions to the country.

Also present to witness the historic moment which climaxed with the unveiling of a plaque and photo commemorating Mr. Curry were Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Marine Resources and Family Island Affairs Leonardo Lightbourne; Permanent Secretary Jack Thompson; Permanent Secretary in the Department of Local Government Neil Campbell; Assistant Commissioner of Police B. K. Bonamy; Acting Controller, Bahamas Customs Ralph Munroe; administrators, Local Government practitioners, members of the clergy, family and friends.
