North Abaco Member of Parliament Kirk Cornish was on Wednesday freed on $9,500 emergency bail by the Supreme Court, soon after he faced charges of rape, assault and threats of death in the Magistrates' Court.

Cornish, a PLP MP, was not shackled or handcuffed when he appeared in court.

He appeared in good spirits as he stood before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley wearing a gray suit and a blue-collared shirt.

Prosecutors say the offenses occurred between January 20, 2023 and April 4, 2023.

Cornish is accused of raping and assaulting a 35-year-old woman on March 5 while on New Providence.

On April 4, while on New Providence, he is accused of raping the woman and threatening to kill her.

Cornish is accused of assaulting the complainant on January 20 while in Cooper's Town, Abaco.

He was not required to plead to the charges since he will be tried in the Supreme Court.

Reckley remanded Cornish to prison until October 17.

However, attorney Owen Wells, who appeared with Anthony McKinney, KC, said he will seek immediate bail.

Wells also asked for the earliest trial date available.

Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Cordell Frazier did not object to bail for Cornish during a hearing before Justice Gregory Hilton.

He set bail at $9,500 with one or two sureties and is barred from having contact with his accuser or anyone connected to her.
