A 24-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with murder and attempted murder.

Davanno Jameko Miller, of Cockburn Street, is accused of the murder of Frantwion Newton and the attempted murder of Romeo Cooper.

The men were at Market Street and Hay Street on July 20 when a gunman exited a white Japanese car and opened fire on them. Both men were rushed to hospital and Newton died a short time later.

Miller faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life with respect to Cooper's shooting.

Miller was not required to enter a plea to the charges when he appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

He was denied bail as the magistrate lacks the jurisdiction to consider bail for the offenses.

Miller, however, can seek bail in the Supreme Court.

His next court date is October 31.
