An urgent plea to help the homeless

Dear Editor,

I'm very concerned with the rapidly growing population of mentally challenged people on our streets. Something MUST be done ASAP.

The Ministry of Social Services, the Ministry of Health and the church should come together and provide a safe home for such people, providing professional healthcare and a chaplain to care for their spiritual well-being.

If we continue to ignore and reject these precious souls and watch them suffer every day in this scorching heat without food, water and shelter in their helpless state, we will all be guilty before God for not loving and caring for our brothers.

The Bahamas is a wealthy country with numerous millionaires enjoying the fat of the land. Even though middle-income families are having a rough time now, we can all sacrifice a few dollars every month to take mentally challenged people and homeless families off the streets and allow them to live in dignity, as we all deserve.

There are scores of vacant apartment complexes and small motels throughout New Providence that can be acquired to help such people who have fallen on hard times for whatever reasons.

All we need is a vision to help and a group of compassionate, committed people who won't waste time complaining, but are willing to join forces and do something about this dilemma that our people are facing.

Let's make it happen. God is with us.
