Summary Report North Andros BPL Power Station Fire Loss Impacts To WSC Operations

Introduction

At or around 3 am on the morning of June 5, 2023, the Bahamas Power and Light power plant located in San Andros, North Andros caught afire and was completely destroyed. Electrical power in North Andros has been terminally affected.

The North and Central Andros Operations department immediately begin efforts to ensure thecontinuous supply of water to residents in North and Central Andros.

Please find a summary report on the impacts of this event to WSC operations and the actions thathave been put in place to ensure the continuous supply of water.

Nichols Town Office

The Corporation’s rental offices are located just 500 feet from the BPL plant. As such the officeexperienced power loss due to the loss of the plant.

A small hand held portable 7.5 kw generator will be sent to Andros to provide temporary powerfor the office until this matter is resolved.

Nichols Town Pumping Station

This station has two 5-million-gallon earth reservoirs that were used of the water barging scheme.It now provides water for all of the North Andros communities. The standby generator for thismain Nichols Town Station was started at 3:25 am. As a result, water was immediately restoredfor the in the Nichol’s Town, Morgan’s Bluff, Lowe Sound and Conch Sound communities.

North Andros New & Old Wellfields

The power at the main new Andros wellfields was affected and without power for several hours.

The Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance Department arranged to have generator contractorPGS Generator Ltd. travel to Andros to check the generator at the new wellfield site. The generatorat that site is and aged unit and was not initially operable.

The generator was serviced and brought on line. However, soon after, that unit failed due to andold and damaged radiator. The radiator was removed and sent to Nassau for repairs. That wellfieldremains out of service at this time.

Pump No.10 in the old Andros wellfield was also without power due to the event. A portablegenerator was transferred to the site to power wellfield no 10. This allowed for water to continueto be supplied to the Nichol’s Town Station for supply to the above listed communities.

Red Bays

One of the department three (3) portable generators was transferred to this pumping station toprovide power. The station was reenergized at 7:15 am. The station is currently providing watersupply to the community

Mastic Point Station

One of the department three (3) portable generators was transferred to this pumping station toprovide power. The station was reenergized 7:25 am. The station is currently providing watersupply to the Mastic Point community

Stafford Creek

Stafford creek was initially not affected by the power plant loss in the north as power is providedfrom the power plant in Fresh Creek. However, that plant began to experienced intermittedproblems. Subsequently it was determined put that station on generator supply. The final of thethree portable units was transferred to that site. It was energized at 11:30 am and continues toprovide water to the Stafford Creek and surrounding communities.

Staniard Creek

This station was initially not impacted by the plant loss in the north. However, that plant began tooexperienced intermitted problems. Subsequently it was determined put that station on the recentlynewly installed standby generator at that site. Staniard creek continued to provide water to thesupply zone. The generator has been refueled.

Fresh Creek

This station was initially not impacted by the plant loss in the north. However, that plant began tooexperienced intermitted problems. Subsequently it was determined put that station on the recentlynewly installed standby generator at that site. Fresh creek continues to provide water to the supplyzone. The generator has been refueled.

Love Hill

There has been no impact to the loss event to the operation of this station. Water continues to besupplied to residents of Love Hill.

Cargill Creek

This station was initially not impacted by the plant loss in the north.However, that plant began to experienced intermitted problems. Subsequently it was determinedput that station on the recently new standby generator at that site. Cargill Creek continues toprovide water to the supply zone. The generator has been refueled.

FUTURE ACTIONS

It has been determined to replace the generator unit at the new wellfield site. A preliminary quotereceived indicate a purchase cost of $88,000.

Supervisor York Butler will travel from Nassau to North Andros to carry out additional generatorand electrical works.

A small standby generator will be provided for the rental offices at Nichol’s town
