Blue Chip camp gets underway today

Mon, Jun 26th 2023, 08:19 AM

For the seventh year, the Blue Chip Club will be hosting its throwing camp beginning today and wrapping up on Saturday, July 1 on the Queen's College campus.

Action gets underway at 9 a.m. and wraps up at 3 p.m. every day this week, except on Saturday when the camp ends at 1 p.m. According to camp host and head coach for Blue Chip, Corrington Maycock, registration for the camp has been going well, but there are still a few spaces left. He is looking forward to seeing lots of campers ages 13 to 15 come out. The cost of the camp is $250.

The campers will learn the proper techniques in the javelin, shot put and discus disciplines. Maycock is happy to see the camp's growth.

"The camp has grown in numbers, with athletes such as Rhema Otabor and Keyshawn Strachan passing through the camp," he said. "The camp is very successful in getting and recognizing talent and inviting talent to join the club. We have some spaces open for the club, so we will pull from that pool and solidify the club more with more experienced and talented kids."

Some of those spaces include the under-17 boys javelin, but the under-17 boys, in general, have spaces available. Maycock will also be looking at the under-17 girls discus and shot put.

The first two and a half days will be for discus and the other two and a half days will be for javelin and shot put. The final day will be used to showcase the campers' talent.

Otabor, who is the current National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women's javelin champion, will be an instructor at the camp. She will be joined by Strachan, the national senior and junior record holder in the men's javelin; Dior-Rae Scott, CARIFTA bronze medalist in the javelin, and Annae Mackey. Laquell Harris will also be with Maycock to ensure the camp runs smoothly.

"It is great to see former campers matured and be able to take over and coach just as well as I can in their area. They are very strong in their area," Maycock said. "It is satisfying as a coach to see they have matured and disciplined. They can now showcase all of that and develop others the same way they came up."

The Bahamas has once again begun to perform at a high level in the field events at CARIFTA. Maycock said the field events can get even stronger.

"I would like to see field events take over completely where The Bahamas has to rely on field events to medal like how it is with Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Steven Gardiner that are basically sure medals," Maycock said. "I want to see us get to that level. We are heading in the right direction with talent. It is a matter of getting better in the next four years."

He appreciates the coaches from other clubs and high schools who send their athletes to the camp and is looking forward to a great camp once again this year.
