The first phase of the 'Road to 50' National Beautification Campaign has begun.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the project, in the first instance, intends to address the removal of garbage, along all north-south thoroughfares island-wide between Bay Street to Wulff Road, and extending as far east as Village Road.  Emphasis will be placed on overgrown open spaces/lots as well as additional environmental remedial works, including the removal of accumulated bulk waste, derelict vehicles, and the white washing of abandoned buildings. Young artists in the communities will be encouraged to apply murals of community leaders and other national symbols to them.

The campaign is in conjunction with the Bahamas Department of Corrections and begins at 6:00 a.m. daily.

Phase II of the project will address major east-west roads in the same area and will extend as far south as Robinson Road.

On Wednesday, June 14, clean-up efforts moved to the West Bay/Nassau Street junction then south along Nassau Street to the roundabout at the intersection of Wulff Road and University Boulevard.

The Hon. Vaughn Miller, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources said other stakeholders will be partnering in this initiative.

“The Ministry of Public Works and Utilities has come on board to coordinate the demolition of several abandoned buildings in the targeted areas; particularly the eyesore at Baillou Hill and Dillet Street, Market Street,  just south of Vesey Street, and East and Anderson streets.

Said Minister Miller, “We encourage the Bahamas Christian Council, churches throughout the various communities and civil society to join us in this initiative.”

He said the Department of Environmental Health Services will also take action to prosecute property owners who are in breach of environmental legislations.

Members of the public in need of assistance with the removal of bulk waste from their premises in the targeted areas may call the National Beautification Project Complaint Unit at telephone numbers 322-8037 (ext. 4109) or 302-5236.
