Acting Commissioner of Corrections Doan Cleare, who recently assigned 50 inmates to clean up Bay Street, said the uncleanliness of the area is a major issue.

The effort is a part of the "Road to 50 National Beautification Campaign" organized by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources.

The campaign began on Monday with the assistance of the Department of Correctional Services.

Cleare said inmates have cleared a massive amount of trash already.

"On Monday past, at 6 a.m., we started from the British Colonial Hotel and by the time we got to Rawson Square, believe it or not, we had 45 massive bags of garbage, including cans, bottles, Kentucky boxes.

"I wouldn't talk about after we got to Rawson Square and ended up at the bridge. We ended up with 87 bags of garbage.

"I'm not here to criticize the people who have the contract for those areas, but we are here to augment what they do."

Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources Vaughn Miller said the project will address the removal of garbage between Nassau Street and Village Road, among other areas.

He said it will also encompass the removal of bulk waste and abandoned vehicles.

Additionally, artisans will be invited to paint murals in some areas.

Miller said officers from the Department of Environmental Health Services (DEHS), along with the police, will prosecute homeowners who are in breach of environmental legislation.

Cleare said the inmates involved in the program are nearing the end of their sentences. He said they will be given a stipend upon their release.
