Intense inclement weather ahead for the entire Bahamas through the weekend

Wed, May 31st 2023, 01:32 PM

An area of disturbed weather associated with a surface trough of low pressure interacting with an upper level trough over the eastern Gulf of Mexico is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions seem only marginally favorable for additional development over the next several days as the system meanders over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This system is forecast to move across the Florida Peninsula this weekend and emerge somewhere north of the Northern Bahamas in the southwest Atlantic Ocean early next week. There is a low chance, between 10 percent and 20 percent of this system forming into a tropical system during the next 2 to 7 days.

However, this system will bring instability along with abundant tropical moisture across the entire Bahamas island chain that will keep the weather cloudy to overcast with widespread rainfall to heavy showers in strong to occasional severe thunderstorm activity from Thursday 01st June through Saturday, 03rd June 2023.

Residents should prepare for severe and intense, shower and thunderstorm activity with excessive rainfall. Prolonged rainfall and heavy downpours will result in localized flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.  The islands of Crooked Island, Acklins, Mayaguana, Inagua, and the Turks and Caicos Islands will experience the brunt of this disturbed weather on Friday 02nd through Saturday, 03rd June 2023 as rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected.

The Bahamas Department of Meteorology will continue to monitor this system and update the public on any significant development. The public should note that the 1st of June begins the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season and they are advised to continue all preparations in the event of the development of a tropical cyclone.
