A father of two who was shot and killed on Sunday night "wasn't perfect", but he worked hard and loved his children, according to his grieving mother.

Antoinette Moxey, 45, said her son, Derren Bastian, 24, was killed for "no reason".

"He was killed for no reason; I don't know why," said Moxey through tears as she spoke with The Nassau Guardian outside her Nassau Village home yesterday.

"He was enough. You know, children aren't perfect, but he wasn't a bad person. He used to go to work. He used to work at a petty shop, go to work, come home, and stay home and then he goes home by his baby mama; sometimes she comes this way or he would go that way."

Moxey said Bastian was on bail for a 2020 armed robbery charge.

Police have indicated no possible motive for his murder.

According to police, shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday, Bastian was approached by the occupants of a small, gray Japanese vehicle as he stood near a food takeaway on Jackson Street, not far from his home.

Someone in the car opened fire on Bastian hitting him in the upper left back, according to police. He was taken to hospital by private vehicle where he died.

"I was home," his mother said.

"I heard this sound gone off saying 'boom'. It didn't sound like a pop-pop; it sounded like a boom.

"I was really thinking it was a motorbike sound or something, but it didn't sound like that. I looked through the window. I didn't see anything, so I didn't bother.

"In a couple of minutes, I get the call saying your son [got shot] and I was like what? So, I rushed down out here to go check, but a private vehicle already took him to the hospital or wherever.

"I was telling the people them to keep him conscious, keep him talking. He could hear me, but he couldn't answer me back because they put the phone on the side of him and I was talking to my son and I tell him don't give up. Then, I got the second call. I got the bad news and I had to go up there to verify him.

"He just was home, so I don't understand where this come from. I just want people to know God don't sleep and He don't slumber because people just do things and think they getting away with it. And they really are not.

"They getting away with it in this world and they got to remember there's a God above you got to answer to at the end of the day. And right now, I don't even know what I'm feeling. I am hurt. Words can't describe how I am feeling right now. It's crazy."

Moxey said Bastian's children are three years old and eight months old.

"He was a nice person," she said. "He's a father figure. He loved his kids; he would do anything for them. He was a hustler. I don't know why people feel as though they could take people's lives and call it nothing.

"I don't know why they feel they have to pick up a gun. Why they can't go back in the day, fight it out or punch it out and call it a day? But nobody wants to do that; everybody feels as if they are bad man. They gotta take somebody out. Why? They can't see what this world is coming to?

"I leave them in God's hands. Conscience is a serious thing. If they don't have one, they will have one when He returns because everybody has to answer to Him. So, they can smile now, but judgement is coming next."
