'Jazz' expected to be out for the next four to six weeks

Bahamian professional baseball player Jasrado 'Jazz' Chisholm Jr. is back on the injured list, suffering a right turf toe injury in the Miami Marlins' 6-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida, on Saturday.

He is expected to be out for the next four to six weeks, as announced by the club on Tuesday, and in an initial move, was placed on the club's 10-day injured list (IL) retroactive to Sunday.

After missing more than half of the season a year ago with a stress fracture in his lower back, Chisholm will go on the IL for the first time this season. He had a modest start to the season but was starting to come around as the primary center fielder of the Marlins and also at the plate.

"It's not what you want from your star center fielder, and we put a lot on his plate early on in the year, in Spring Training, and he's done nothing but grow in that position and really started to swing the bat lately, too," said Marlins Manager Skip Schumaker to Christina De Nicola of mlb.com. "Definitely [a] tough loss, but from what we understand, it's a four to six-week type of deal, and so looking forward to him getting healthy and getting back."

The Bahamian star player injured his right big toe on the cement block of the left-center-field wall at LoanDepot park on Saturday as he tried to make an inning-ending catch off a drive by Reds' outfielder Henry Ramos. X-rays came back negative.

"It was like one or two things: I could have jumped to make a better impact into the wall [or] I could have stopped early," Chisholm said on Saturday about the play. "... [I]n my head, it's all about making that play. It's the eighth inning. Game's tied, two outs, we're about to go up to hit. We could literally win the game here."

Chisholm volunteered a move to center field from the infield to make space for American League batting champion Luis Arráez who was acquired by the Marlins in a trade with the Twins. Chisholm grew into the position, entering Tuesday ranked in the 93rd percentile among major leaguers in outs above average and in the 92nd percentile for outfielder jump.

His untimely injury presents yet another blow to the Marlins' lineup, as he was starting to find his swing by going deep in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. He has slashed .229/.291/.403 with two doubles, one triple, seven homers, 16 RBIs and 14 steals in 39 games.

The Marlins (21-21) entered Wednesday's gamer against the Washington Nationals in second place in the National League East Division of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Atlanta Braves lead the division with a 26-16 win/loss record.

The Marlins finish up their series with the Nationals tomorrow, then go on a 16-game road trip out west starting with three games against Bahamian Antoan Richardson and the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, this weekend. Richardson is a first base coach with the Giants.
