Minister of Transport and Housing the Hon. JoBeth Coleby-Davis and other Senior Ministry of Transport officials met with members of the Bahamas Taxicab Union (BTU) and the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) to discuss the Ministry’s Taxi Industry Service Improvement Programme under the theme: Building Consensus for Improvements in the Taxi Industry, at Baha Mar Resort, Wednesday, May 3, 2023.

They discussed maintaining the economic viability of the industry – with a focus on ensuring that all taxi drivers can sustain a decent quality lifestyle; the improvement and enhancement of service standards being offered by the taxi drivers, inclusive of their attire, deportment and cleanliness of their vehicles; ensuring appropriate fares are being charged in accordance with approved fees and improving taxi licensing and inspection process with a key focus on ensuring that appropriate vehicles are being used in the taxi industry.

Some of the objectives of the programme are the publication of taxi fares at key destinations, requirement to display approved fares in all taxis, the establishment of a pact between the Ministry of Transport, the BTU and the BHTA to allow for greater communication and support of shared interests.

Minister Coleby-Davis explained that some of these issues including increased fares were being discussed before she became Minister but she is ensuring that the discussions continue.

Also in attendance at the meeting were: BHTA President, Robert Sands; BTU President, Wesley Ferguson; Ministry of Transport Permanent Secretary, Dr. Donna Miller; Undersecretary, Gaynell Rolle; Acting Controller, Ross Smith and ICT Specialist, Tajh Seymour.
