An American man who lied about how much money he was traveling with was yesterday convicted of making a false declaration.

John Ready, 66, of Florida, pleaded guilty to the charge at his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

While at Lynden Pindling International Airport on April 28, Ready falsely told a US Customs and Border Patrol officer that he was only traveling with $5,000.

However, a search of his luggage revealed that Ready had $28,256.

Ferguson-Pratt forfeited the money to the Crown and fined Ready $300 with a three-day default sentence if the fine is unpaid.

Ready was represented by Keevon Maynard. In mitigation, he said that Ready and his family cut their trip short because their home in Fort Lauderdale had been destroyed in a storm.

He said that Ready and his relatives were traveling there to assess the damage to their home.
