The Bahamas Boxing Federation (BBF) is mourning the loss of promising young boxer Tyrone Oliver whose life was taken over the weekend in New Providence.

Oliver, 27, was one of the victims in a double murder in the Solomon's Super Center parking lot on East West Highway in the early hours of Saturday morning. The other victim was his brother.

The welterweight boxer turned professional in 2018 and sported a 1-2 win/loss record. His last professional fight was July 31, 2021. His last time in the ring was March when he was action in the super lightweight division for Team New Providence in the Wellington 'Sonny Boy' Rahming and Leonard 'Boston Blackie' Miller Memorial Boxing Championship held at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium.

"It is painful for me because I only got to meet him earlier this year, although we communicated for several years," said Vincent Strachan, president of the BBF. "He was a member of the Bahamas Boxing Federation elite men's team. I extend my condolences to his immediate family, his boxing family and friends. I pray God will have mercy on him and his family member who died in the same incident. May their souls and the faithfully departed rest in peace and rise in glory."

Strachan said the 5' 7" boxer was a part of Team Bahamas' team for the International Boxing Association's (IBA) World Boxing Championships, set for April 29 to May 14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Oliver was making plans to go to the federation's training camp in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

He was also looking forward to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, set for San Salvador, El Salvador, in June. There was also a Pan American Games qualifier set for in Cali, Colombia, in August that he was getting ready for. Oliver was also gearing up for the Pan American Games from October 20 to November 5, in Santiago, Chile. Strachan said that Oliver will be missed.

"He would be difficult to replace," said Strachan.

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be held in Paris, France, and Oliver was looking forward to qualifying for that global event.
