Promotional Exercise Announced for the Public Service

Minister of State for the Public Service the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle said for the first time since 2014, there will be a public service-wide promotional exercise for all public servants who have already met the standard but did not receive the promotions they earned.

“Hundreds of public servants will receive promotions as a result of this process,” the Minister of State said during a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday, April 6, 2023.

She said, “Congratulations to all public servants who will be promoted. It is well deserved. I know how hard you have worked and how long many of you have waited.”

The Minister of State said she wants Bahamians to know that the public service is a place where there is career progression through fair, objective, and transparent processes based on track record.

“We are not talking about promotions through political connections. The vast majority of public servants are normal, everyday people of modest means who report to work each day and do their very best.

“It has been so long since the last promotional exercise, that a good majority of public servants being promoted will receive two promotions. Many of them were already performing work that was far beyond their current titles.

She explained that the work needed to be done, and those public servants stepped up to fill in the gaps.

The Minister of State said, “We all know the stories of clerical staff who are doing work that far exceeds their job titles. Their titles and their compensation will now match the work they do. I want to be very clear. These workers have earned their promotions.”

She said when the normal cycle of promotions does not occur, gaps are created when people leave the public service for retirement or other reasons.

“There are government employees who are filling the gaps, doing the actual work that would normally be done by higher ranking public servants. However, often due to budgetary constraints, promotions are not forthcoming.

“Many of these public servants perform exceptionally despite these circumstances. I think anyone would agree that in these cases the employee who was performing above and beyond their formal duties is worthy of a promotion. Many of the people being promoted through this exercise fit this description.”

The Minister of State added that In the coming weeks, all public servants selected for promotions will be informed and we will begin finalizing the process to be completed throughout the coming months.
