Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Chester Cooper yesterday announced a new, $300 million development slated for West Grand Bahama, called Eden.

He said the development will break ground by the fourth quarter of this year.

Cooper made the announcement during his keynote address at the Grand Bahama Business Outlook.

He said Eden hotels and resorts is a Bahamian-registered company, while its principals are based in the United states.

Cooper explained that the group, which he said has extensive experience in commercial real estate, will develop an eco-resort community and sustainable farm for aquaculture production on 93 acres of waterfront property.

"Eden is already in the process of purchasing the 93 acres of waterfront property," said Cooper.

He explained that the principals of the company are already operating a sustainable agriculture research program along with the University of Rhode Island through a public-private partnership.

According to Cooper, the developers of Eden will build a resort with villas and an agriculture component designed to grow fresh produce not only for the resort, but also the domestic market and for export to the US.

He added that the developers will adhere to environmentally sensitive principles across all of their operations.

Many of the Grand Bahamians at the Outlook heard about the Eden project for the first time yesterday, Guardian Business was told.

Cooper said during the outlook that not counting the $200 million redevelopment of the Grand Bahama International Airport that he announced yesterday, the island has $1 billion of development projects in the pipeline.
