Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday appealed to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to stand with Ukraine at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly next week when a resolution will be presented aimed at bringing peace to the fractured country that remains at war with Russia.

During a live video address at the 44th CARICOM Heads of Government meeting, Zelenskyy said, "Real stability is possible only when we all together protect the world from state savagery.

"Next week, we will present at the UN General Assembly a resolution on a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine, and hence the restoration of the full force of the international rules-based order.

"Your votes matter.

"I have presented the peace formula and your leadership can help to implement it."

Zelenskyy said approximately 18 percent of Ukraine's territory is occupied by Russia.

"Is normal life possible there? No," he continued as he decried the atrocities that his people continue to face as a result of the war that has dragged on for a year.

"...This is the reason why it was Ukraine [which] proposed the peace formula that can end this war and restore everything destroyed by the Russian aggression."

He added that Ukraine is fighting for international conventions and treaties to be effective, "so that everyone in the world has guarantees that no crime of aggression can be committed against him".

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Thousands of civilians and members of the military forces have died as a result of the war.

The Ukraine-Russia war has also resulted in an increase in inflation both locally and abroad.

The vote on the peace resolution at the UN General Assembly is expected to take place on February 23.

"I encourage you to further cooperation," Zelenskyy said during his address to CARICOM.

"Peace must be carried forward together."

In his response, Prime Minister Philip Davis, CARICOM chairman, reiterated CARICOM's "sincere and lasting solidarity with the people of Ukraine on the ongoing fight for liberation".

"We have watched in admiration as you and your people have defended yourselves against formidable odds and with unimaginable bravery," Davis said.

"And even as we watched in horror the bombs and missiles attacking your towns and villages, we have marveled at your dignity and steely determination.

"We condemn the actions taken by Russia in violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. We stand firmly with you and the international community in seeking a just and secure diplomatic solution to this terrible crisis."
