A Supreme Court jury Tuesday evening acquitted a 51-year-old man accused of the 2015 murder of a retired British doctor on Long Island.

The jurors rejected the purported confession of Moses Morris, the only evidence that linked him to the April 1, 2015 murder of Dr. Harry Harding.

The jury was unable to reach a decision on the alternative verdict of manslaughter. As a result, Morris, who has been locked up for almost eight years, will face another trial for manslaughter.

Prosecutors alleged that Morris and 88-year-old Harding, the deceased, had a business relationship involving conch pearls.

On April 1, 2015, Morris allegedly went to Harding's home to collect on monies allegedly owed to him for the pearls.

According to the confession, they got into an argument that turned physical and Morris stabbed Harding with a knife from his kitchen. He allegedly washed off the murder weapon and returned it to the knife block.

However, defense lawyer David Cash convinced the jury that the confession was not to be believed.

In his closing submissions, Cash said that the evidence of the murder weapon did not align with the evidence of the pathologist, who said she removed a silver metal object from Harding's scalp during the autopsy.

Cash suggested that the tip of the knife broke during the attack, and the murder weapon was not left behind as prosecutors alleged.

He said, "If this is not the knife, then you should give Mr. Morris back his life."

He said the case was an "international incident" and police felt that "someone had to go down for this".

For his part, the prosecutor, Timothy Bailey, urged the jury to accept the confession and convict Morris of murder.
