A cyclist died on Saturday afternoon after his scooter crashed into a utility pole on Cowpen Road, police said.

Chief Superintendent David Lockhart said the man was traveling east on Cowpen Road when he reportedly lost control of his scooter and crashed.

Lockhart said the victim, believed to be in his middle to late 30s, died on the scene.

This is the third traffic fatality for the year so far.

Lockhart appealed to motorists and pedestrians to take special care when traveling.

"We are sending an appeal to all drivers, riders, passengers, pedestrians in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to please adhere to all the traffic rules and regulations," he said on the scene of the crash.

"If you are a pedestrian and you're traveling at night, please ensure that you're wearing highly visible clothes.

"If you are a passenger in a vehicle, the law requires that you must wear a seatbelt. If you are a passenger on the bed of a truck, the law requires you to be seated on the bed of the truck and not on the lining of the truck."
