Bail for teens charged with police station shooting

A magistrate yesterday granted bail for two teenagers who police allege opened fire on a police station in Eleuthera.
Gun Court Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt set bail at $15,000 for Javaughn Javis Saunders, 19, and a 17-year-old boy who face charges of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of an unlicensed firearm and damage.
Prosecutors allege that they shot at the Governor's Harbour Police Station around 3:15 a.m. on August 7 with a 9mm pistol and caused $500 in damage to the southern glass window and the front desk at the police station.  They are also accused of having a firearm to endanger the life of Officer Barbara Saunders and the unauthorized possession of a firearm.  Police allege that a bullet narrowly missed the officer as she sat at the station's front desk.
Saunders and the juvenile were not required to enter pleas to the charges against them.  A preliminary inquiry to determine if there is enough evidence for a Supreme Court trial is set to begin on October 26.
The teens spent the weekend in prison after Acting Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell deferred their bail hearing until today.
Devard Francis, who represents Saunders, and Calvin Seymour, who represents the juvenile, alleged that police abused their clients while they were in custody.  They alleged that both teens were uninjured when police arrested them, but they both now have injuries on their bodies.
