From Downtown Nassau and Lyford Cay to Grand Bahama and the out islands, Henry Melich’s designs have shaped what many think of as traditional Bahamian architecture. 

And a glance through Island Follies is akin to looking through the windows of some Melich’s most prominent designs, into the living rooms and lives of the rich and famous, who spared no expense when it came to bringing to life the island homes of their dreams.

The pictorial essay by Alastair Gordon and Tanya Melich Crone, Melich’s daughter, gives readers a peek into some of the more than 150 buildings designed by the late renowned architect that remain preserved today.

The first signing for Island Follies, which recently hit shelves in book stores across the country, will be held at Oasis Living in Sandyport on November 3.

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. members of the public are encouraged to stop in and have their copies signed, while enjoying refreshments provided by Bon Vivants.

Oasis Proprietor Brooke Pyfrom said it’s an honour to be able to host the signing, especially given her vision when founding Oasis.

“I think the location is fitting, because our goal since opening has been to bring beauty into Bahamian homes, and that’s what Melich did for such a long time,” said Pyfrom. “So, we are extremely enthused to have been selected for the signing, and we hope that the event will bring together people who are equally excited about design and architecture.”

Pyfrom said all are welcome to attend the signing, but noted space at the venue is limited. 

Populated with images of some of Melich’s most beautiful work, showcasing grand courtyards, verandas with sweeping views and classic interiors, Island Follies is sure to be a favourite of many, from design enthusiasts to anyone in search of a new piece for the coffee table.
