‘Youth Building a B.O.L.D. Future’ Theme of Youth Month (October)

The month of October has been launched as NationalYouth Month. The announcement was made during a press conference held atthe Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture on Monday, 26th September. TheMinister, Hon. Mario Bowleg said observance of Youth Month was a long time incoming since in-person celebrations were hampered due to COVID-19 protocols.

“We as a Ministry are so happy to announce the launch of in-person activities forthe 2022 National Youth Month Celebrations. Our young people have been ableto survive the past two-and-a-half years of this pandemic through their resilienceand pure grit, we salute and applaud them.”

He said this year’s theme, ‘Youth Building a B.O.L.D. Future: Bright, Optimistic,Label-less and Diverse’ speaks to the current space that young people exist in asthey forge new pathways for themselves and walk boldly in the direction of theirdreams.

“During the celebrations of this month our bright and optimistic youth will be ondisplay for the entire world to see. Our commitment is to be as inclusive and asdiverse as is needed and to lead the charge in dropping all labels that are so oftenplaced on our young people and instead taking the time to shine the light on thelimitless possibilities that exist.”

He said that they were especially pleased that many of the Family Islands arejoining in the celebrations. “So whether you reside in New Providence or in NorthAndros, Marsh Harbour, Georgetown, Matthew Town, Bannerman Town or EightMile Rock, there is a range of activities designed for you.

“As a part of our celebrations we are always delighted to partner with youthstakeholders and this year is no different, so I wish to take this opportunity tothank those who have joined this year’s celebrations in a formal way and [will be]hosting events for all to enjoy.”

During the month of activities, persons who contributed to the development ofyouth in the country will also be recognized and honored for their contributions.

Among them will be a couple from Grand Bahama who will be recognized as‘Lifetime Achievement Honourees’: They are Leslie and Yvonne McDonald, whowill serve as this year’s patrons.

Minister Bowleg said it is the intent of his team to ensure that by the end ofOctober, every Bahamian through the length and breadth of the country wouldhave a greater appreciation for the patrons’ work and legacy: Mr. McDonald asFounder of ‘Legends Marching Band’ and Mrs. McDonald as Commandant of theGrand Bahama Girls’ Brigade. Community builder, educator and sports legend,Anita Doherty, will also be honored posthumously.

“I invite the public to join us in giving special honor to these pioneers in youthdevelopment,” said Mr. Bowleg. “So as Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Isend out a clarion call to one and all, National Youth Month is here, join us as wecelebrate our youth who are building a bold future for themselves and forgenerations to come.”

The month of celebrations will include a number of activities beginning onOctober 1 with a Church Service. Events will also include concerts, a youthleadership summit, speech competition, cooking competition, scavenger hunt,youth rally, youth award ceremony among other activities. The month will endwith ‘Youth in Parliament’ and ‘Youth in the Senate’.
