Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died. She was the longest-serving monarch in British history and the second-longest serving monarch of a sovereign state in history. She was 96 years old after serving 70 years on the throne. 

According the official twitter account of The Royal Family, the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

She is succeeded by her eldest son and heir, the Prince of Wales, who becomes King Charles III.
